Abstract
Addressing prominent psychological characteristics of characters in literature can be effective in providing the opportunity for identification, experience development and indirect learning for the audience. Having a deliberate perspective towards the science of psychology and taking into consideration the clever audience of today, the writers of child and adolescent literature may invent influential characters and this, in turn, opens a wide window for the audience to understand difficulties and problems of different age periods as well as their solutions. Relying on a descriptive approach and qualitative content analysis based on Freudian Theory, this study aims to extract and describe psychological traits of an adolescent character in one of the novels of FarhadHassanzadeh, “This Weblog is being Turned Over”, and finally, the causes of psychological problems and crises of this character are explored.
Through selection of an adolescent narrator at the contemporary time setting, together with the main narrator, the author has tried to make the reader feel involved in the story. In this novel, the author has managed, to some extent, to delicately reflect on the personality traits of contemporary adolescents, i.e. having romantic relationship with opposite gender and needs for affection and attention, and the causes of psychological disorders in the main character of the novel, so that a tangible multilayer personality is created for the adolescent reader. Although Hassanzadeh has depicted this personality in a war setting, he has tried to keep the protagonist away from idealistic features through introducing several personality traits and dimensions for this adolescent character, who is after satisfying his own natural desires even in the most critical conditions of the society. |
